About the School
About the School
Ungoofaaru School has been striving to provide quality education to the students of Ungoofaaru for the last 43 years. The school has emerged as an institution capable of delivering exemplary performances in school curriculum. Established in 1962 as a community school supported by government, the school started functioning in a three rooms temporary building which was originally the store-room of the Island during the Second World War.
In December 1983 a new building was constructed on the present campus with aid from IHAP. The present office building was funded by the government. Later, the adjoining buildings were constructed with funds from the Government and the island community.
In 2001, the school was upgraded to Secondary Level with a Grade 8 batch in Commerce Stream. These students appeared for the O’ Level Examinations in 2003.
The school was able to achieve the top position among the schools of its category in the Maldives. In the following year the school had its first batch of science stream students in grade 8.
In December 2004, the school witnessed a major change as the tsunami victims of Kandholhudhoo arrived on the island. In the beginning of 2005 nine temporary class rooms were built with UNICEF fund to accommodate the newly enrolled students numbered around 600. These class rooms serve the purpose even now as the school has adopted the single session system since this academic year (2009).
Along with the single session system of education, Ungoofaaru School also started its venture into a more holistic education. In order to provide a more holistic education, the school started four vocational programs along with mentoring sessions, study skills sessions and English games and drama sessions.
